Petrol hiked by Rs 3.07/litre, diesel by Rs 1.90

New Delhi, Mar 16 (IANS): State-run Indian Oil Corp (IOC) on Wednesday announced a big hike in transport fuel rates, increasing petrol by Rs.3.07 a litre and diesel by Rs.1.90 -- both at Delhi, with corresponding increase in other states.

The hikes will be effective midnight on Wednesday, the company said adding that the hardening of global crude oil rates warranted such an increase.

"The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and the INR-USD exchange rate warrant increase in prices of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision," IOC said in a statement here.

Petrol per litre from Thursday will cost Rs.59.68 in Delhi, Rs.63.76 in Kolkata, Rs.65.79 in Mumbai and Rs.59.13 in Chennai,

The price of diesel per litre will be Rs.48.33 in Delhi, Rs.50.75 in Kolkata, Rs.55.06 in Mumbai and Rs.49.09 in Chennai.

In its previous fortnightly revision of prices earlier this month, Indian Oil moved in contrary directions cutting the petrol price by over Rs.3 a litre, but raising diesel by Rs.1.50.

The Indian basket of crude oils, composed of 73 percent sour grade Dubai and Oman crudes and the rest by sweet grade UK Brent, closed on the previous trading day on Tuesday at $35.42 a barrel of 159 litres, after having fallen below $25 earlier in the year.

At this point I remember famous old saying "When the cow dies, every one says that cow was giving more milk". Dr. M M Singh said I will be remembered in History. When Per barrel rate was $115/= in India the petrol price did not exceed Rs. 70/= may be less. Now per barrel price is less that $40 but we Indian are paying around Rs. 60/=. Where the the earning going??? Now I feel I should salute Dr. Singh, he had that vision and qualification.

Not exactly. I agree there are some indirect cost involved for refining crude to finished product. But still cost what we are paying is too high. Even when UAE offered to India 2/3 free for storing their 1/3 of crude which they will take it back when need arise. The benefit is going to Govt. and Corporates. No objection for benefit going to Govt., why not share the benefits of corp orates with the other citizens.

Who are raising voice against price rise is that government does not controls the prices of petrol products, since UPA in 2009 withdrawn the subsidy given to oil companies and left the companies to decide the price.

If rise is price is because of government then why people are commenting when prices declines???

Why are they hiding in rat holes

As long as the Indian middle class don't act this looting will go on.

Imagine how many times we are being taxed:
    1. You work - pay Income Tax on your salary.

    2. You go for a movie - you pay around 40% various taxes on top of the cost of the movie ticket you have purchased and by the way you have already been taxed the income tax.

    3. You go to dine, again you pay all different unimaginable taxes including 'swach Bharat' tax and again on the money for which you have already paid a huge amount of income tax.

    4. You save money in the bank you pay taxes.

Besides collecting taxes the country produces and exports or sells locally: gold, iron ore, wood, coal, crude, various different metal ores, which we all Indians are entitled to, what is happening with all these earnings?

So ultimately how much are we paying for this weasel of a Government we have elected.

    Can anyone put a number.

Considering a minimum of 1 rupee per every Indian, I would say that the Indians are contributing around 120 crore rupees a day in taxes and if this figure was hiked to 10 rupees then it will be more than 1200 crore rupees a day which by far is a very conservative estimate.

What is the Government doing with all this money?

    Jeevan,

The hike in the crude is very minimal which i don't think will impact the final product. Hiking petrol by 3 cant be justified no matter what reasons given. Further there is no much variation in the rupee-dollar for past 1 month.
Government eye washed the people by reducing prices and now with no proper justification prices are hiked.
