We have to fight for our legal rights: Rane

Calangute, Mar 10 (TOI): Goan women need to be more aware of their legal rights, said the former chairperson of Bal Bhavan, Vijayadevi Rane. Speaking at the Women's Day celebration organized by Calangute panchayat, Rane, who is also the wife of opposition leader Pratapsingh Rane, said, "I feel women are yet to fight for their legal rights; the legal rights that they are entitled to as women. We have to get up and fight for them because that will benefit us a lot. We will not get them unless we fight for them."

Rane was the chief guest at celebrations held at Calangute's Poriat ground, where the local panchayat had organized a number of games and contests for women of the village. There was a musical entertainment programme, too. A large number of women participated in the games like spoon-and-lemon, in which they had to run while holding a spoon with a lemon in their mouths. The most hilarious contest was that of doughnut-eating, in which participants had to eat a doughnut that was hanging from a string without using their hands.

Sarpanch Filomena Fernandes, along with all members of the Calangute panchayat and other women activists, were present for the function.
