PSV, Ajax and AZ march on in Dutch football

The Hague, Feb 22 (IANS): While PSV, Ajax and AZ continued their winning streaks in Dutch football league Eredivisie, Feyenoord remained winless for the ninth time in a row.

Feyenoord, which welcomed former Dutch national team coach Dick Advocaat as advisor last week, drew 1-1 against Roda JC on Sunday. Dirk Kuijt opened the scoring with his 100th official goal for the club but in the second half Roda came back through Maecky Ngombo. The draw meant Feyenoord did finish a series of seven consecutive defeats, reports Xinhua.

After seven defeats in a row, fans of Feyenoord wanted to show their dissatisfaction with the club board with a protest before the match in Rotterdam. The police arrested 200 protesters.

Ajax booked their third victory in a row by defeating Excelsior 3-0 in Amsterdam. Polish striker Arek Milik found the net twice and Davy Klaassen produced the final goal five minutes from time. Also, Vitesse drew 2-2 at De Graafschap and FC Utrecht beat Willem II 2-1.

AZ recorded their seventh consecutive win, 4-1 against FC Groningen, and league leaders PSV defeated third placed Heracles Almelo 2-0, thanks to an early goal by Davy Propper and a penalty by Gaston Pereiro.

PSV maintained the lead in Eredivisie with 59 points from 24 matches with Ajax one point behind. AZ (40) moved up to third place, followed by FC Utrecht (38), Heracles (38), Vitesse (37) and Feyenoord (37).
