Ajman, Feb 20: Gulf Medical University (GMU), the leading private medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group - UAE will be organizing its annual sports festival 2016 from March 5 to 10, at the city's university campus. The sports festival is being held in line with GMU’s philosophy 'A healthy body for a healthy mind' to facilitate student interactions as well as to provide them a platform to exhibit their sports talent.
The sports festival which is being organized in association with Body & Soul Health Club and Spa will be a grand sports event which will see the participation of around 27 leading universities and colleges from across the UAE. Competitions include cricket, football, basketball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, throwball, volleyball, squash and swimming, in addition to track events. The awards ceremony for the winners will be held on the concluding day, at the university grounds.
The draw of lots for the annual sports festival was held on Thurday February 18 at the GMU campus. Prof Gita Ashok Raj - provost of GMU, Dr Joshua Ashok – dean, student affairs who is also chairman-sports committee of GMU, Dr Ishtiyaq Shaafie – specialist in Biochemistry at the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation (CABRI) of GMU and the representatives and students from the participating institutions were present for finalizing the fixtures of all the events.
Later, the students and the representatives of the participating institutions were taken on a tour of the university and the Body & Soul Health Club and Spa in the campus. The club is the first of its kind in the city offering extensive sports, recreation, fitness, health, social and youth programmes. It is located on the grounds of the Gulf Medical University with very easy access to Ajman, Sharjah and Northern Emirates and with ample parking. The facilities include a luxury family pool and deck, an extensive fitness suite with a view, dance and yoga studios, a 3 court tennis center with their very own pro, badminton, squash, volleyball and basketball courts, a soccer/cricket pitch and a ladies only section with a gym and private access to the ladies pool.
