Uganda enters int'l events to boost athletes' fitness ahead of Rio


Kampala, Feb 2 (IANS): Ugandan athletes will feature at several international tournaments to boost their fitness ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics in August.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation told Xinhua on Monday that next month is going to be busy as several athletes will go for the World Half Marathon in Cardiff, World University Cross Country and the Africa Cross Country event in Cameroon.

He said the country's star athlete and 2012 Olympic gold medallist Stephen Kiprotich is set to participate in the 2016 Tokyo Marathon on February 28.

"This is a good event for our star athlete to gauge himself ahead of the Olympics in Brazil," said Otuchet.

Already seven Ugandan long distance runners have qualified for the Olympics including Kiprotich.
