Panaji, Jan 26 (IANS): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has accepted 'Z' category police security in view of specific security concerns, Goa Director General of Police T.N. Mohan said on Tuesday.
Even after being sworn in as the defence minister, Parrikar had earlier refused to avail the 'Z' category while he was in the state.
But he has now agreed to it, given the pan-India security scenario and a specific death threat earlier this month conveyed via a post card signed off as IS, Mohan said.
"He has accepted," Mohan said, when asked if Parrikar, a former Goa chief minister, had accepted the Z category security cover.
Police had briefed Parrikar after the post card - threatening to kill him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi - was posted to the Goa Secretariat.
"There was a threat element... We are taking precautions in view of the post card and the general situation. He comes home to Goa, therefore we would like to ensure we maintain his protection," Mohan said.
