Panaji, Sep 7: A major landslide took place on the National Highway 17 near the Prime Mandovi Bridge circle at Porvorim, 1 km away from Panaji. The landslide occured when a huge part of a hillock just opposite to the Goa Assembly Complex at Porvorim suddenly collapsed. However since the incident took place in the wee hours of the morning there were no casualties reported.
Due to this massive landslide there is a major change being made in the traffic flow entering into Panaji city with one road completely blocked and shut. As a result of this there is constant massive traffic jams found now on the Mandovi Bridge and at the Betim ferry point.
Moreover, due to the landslide there is a 120 meter long and a 10 meter deep crack which has developed on the entire hillock (the landslide spot) and causing great apprehension that the whole thing might come crumbling down, at any moment. The PWD department on its part has now started its work on a war-footing by undertaking the clearing work of the huge boulders, which had came down due to repeated landslides on the same place at Porvorim.
Chief engineer Wachasunder has given an assurance that the debris will be cleared within 10 days and the said road will be made available to traffic. Traffic department, Goa Police and Goa Fire Force department are all on their toes trying to avoid any major tragedy.
