Gen Jacob not only a war hero but green hero: Goa assembly

Panaji, Jan 15 (TOI): Former Goa governor and war hero Lt Gen J F R Jacob (Rtd) will be remembered by Goans for his immense contribution as a good administrator and green hero, said members of the Goa Assembly while condoling his death Thursday.

Speaking on the condolence motion moved by Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncolienker, Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar said Gen Jacob's contribution to Goa was immense especially in declaring the wildlife sanctuaries and increasing its green cover. He thought of the long term gains for the state of Goa both in terms of environment and development and will always be remembered by the people of the state, Parsekar said.

Opposition Leader Pratapsing Rane lauded the contribution of Gen Jacob not only in Goa but at the national level.

Vijai Sardesai said he was not only a war hero but also a green hero. "If Goa is seen green from the aircraft high in the sky it is thanks to Gen Jacob", the Fatorda MLA said.

In a sarcastic comment, he said he thought the government would declare a holiday today as was done by the BJP government when another former governor Kidarnath Sahani passed away last year.

Nilesh Cabral said as the governor he could reach Canacona -the southern most part of Goa, in the morning to check whether the citizens were getting proper health care in government-run health centres. "Goa needs a good administrator like him", he remarked. Several members spoke on the motion.

A one minute silence was observed as mark of respect to Gen Jacob who passed away on Wednesday.
