Sharjah, Dec 31: The Konkani Community of St Michael’s Church had a grand Christmas celebration in a one-of-a-kind unified celebration on Saturday December 26. Both the Goan and Mangalurean Konkani communities came together as one to show their oneness and unity.

On December 26, the evening began with a holy mass in Konkani at 6.30 pm followed by a cultural programme. The holy mass was celebrated by Fr Maxim Pinto, spiritual director of the Konkani community. The cultural programme began with a short introduction by Uttam Menezes. Core committee members of the Goan and Mangalurean community came together on stage, along with Fr Maxim and Fr Felicio to a symbolic unity cake cutting.

The cultural programme began with carol singing by veteran singer Santaninho Rodrigues. This was followed by a group dance by the Mangalurean kids followed by more English and Konkani carols by Santan Rodrigues and his team. The Goan youth presented a lovely Portuguese dance followed by a Goan Mando by Santan Rodrigues and team. The final item was group carol singing in Konkani led by Godwin D’Souza.

There was entertainment galore for the audience who had gathered in a large number. Spot games were conducted throughout the programme to ensure active participation from one and all. Santa Claus with his bag of goodies was the highlight of the evening.

The programme was ably compered by Martha D’Souza and Nisha Lobo. The programme ended with distribution of Kuswar packets, cake and juice to all who had gathered. This successful event has indeed marked the beginning of many more such unified events to come in the near future.
