Salvadoran banned footballer murdered

San Salvador, Dec 28 (IANS): Former El Salvador footballer Alfredo Pacheco, suspended for life for fixing international matches, has been gunned down in the northwestern province of Santa Ana.

Two people "who were speaking with the player" at a service station early on Sunday were wounded in the shooting, the Attorney General's Office said, reports Efe.

Investigators responded to the shooting at 3:30 a.m., the AG's Office said.

The 33-year-old Pacheco was one of 15 players banned for life in 2013 for fixing four matches played by the national team to benefit foreign gamblers.

Pacheco played for the Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos (FAS), Aguila and Isidro Metapan clubs in El Salvador, as well as for the New York Red Bulls in the US.

The defender won a gold medal with El Salvador's team in the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.

He represented El Salvador in 86 matches.
