Man arrested in Goa for killing two children, attacking wife

Panaji, Dec 26 (IANS): A 32-year-old man was arrested on Saturday from the beachside village of Candolim in North Goa for murdering his two children and brutally assaulting his wife, who is a foreign national.

Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar, who is in-charge at the Calangute Police Station, said that the accused, Philip Fernandes, was under medication for a psychiatric condition.

The tragedy was reported to the police by Fernandes himself, a fact that surprised the police.

"He has been arrested for the murder of his two children and the attack on his wife, who is currently in hospital undergoing treatment. We are investigating a possible motive," Vernekar said.

He said the children Eliza (9) and Katrina (3) were strangulated, while Fernandes' wife Swetlana was attacked with a sharp weapon on Saturday morning.
