Goan pop star Remo Fernandes no longer Indian citizen: Cops

Panaji, Dec 23 (TNN): Goa's iconic pop star and Padma Shri awardee Remo Fernandes is a Portuguese citizen, the Goa police have discovered in the course of investigations into allegations that he heaped verbal abuse he is said to have heaped on a minor girl who suffered injuries in a car accident caused by his son.

The Goa police on Tuesday said Remo had obtained a Portuguese passport, but did not mention when the singer became a foreign national.

The Agasaim police has sent the second summons issued to him to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Panaji, with a request that it be forwarded to the Indian embassy in Lisbon to be served on Remo in Portugal.

The Agasaim police is probing the alleged verbal abuse of a minor girl at the Goa medical college (GMC) and hospital, where she was admitted after being knocked down by a vehicle driven by Remo's son Jonah Delalaye Fernandes on December 1.

Remo, who is currently in Europe, was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007.

TOI had first written about Goans rushing in to obtain Portuguese nationality by surrendering their Indian passports in order to find jobs in Europe, especially in the UK. This year itself, up to August, an average of nine Goans a day surrendered their Indian passports. A Portuguese passport entails visa-free entry to 172 countries, and easier access to high-paying employment.

Many Goans, who now hold a Portuguese passport, get better paid than other Indian nationals abroad. A Portuguese passport consultant estimates there are over two lakh Goans living in Goa, who have got their births transcribed in the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais (Central Registry of Births) in Lisbon.

Persons born in Goa, Daman, Diu and Nagar Haveli before 18 Dec., 1961 and their children (with some condition) can apply for Portuguese nationality. There are lot of advantages being a Portuguese national, even though it is a poor country and no employment opportunities. But, since they have free access to 172 countries, they can work and live in those countries. Though there is dual nationality allowed for them in Lisbon, some Indians do not apply, because India does not allow dual nationality. But, since there is Overseas Indian Card, many advantages that are available to Indians they can still enjoy.

How come the authorities are unaware, that too a celebrity obtaining Portuguese citizenship? Didn’t he surrender his Indian passport? If not he should be prosecuted in accordance with the law and stripped of his award if convicted.

    Mr. Santhosh K.,
What has ruling party got to do with this issue? A person born in Goa before 1961 and his children are eligible for Portuguese citizenship. This is according to Portuguese law. But one who obtains citizenship of another country, has to surrender his Indian citizenship which is Indian law.

Maybe another reason for Remo to take Portuguese citizenship was the fear of the rising intolerance in India.Remo Fernandes has OCI status so there is no violation.

He left Indian citizenship years back, may be during the golden era of congis. You mean to say intolerance was there even that time? Not necessarily just after modi won?
Also, now that he is on the tolerant side, you are suggesting that that poor little girl who his son has knocked down is intolerant towards him?

In a hurry, the self-proclaimed tolerant folks mess up the logic so royally, LOL

I was surprised when in midst of this controversy, Remo left for 'Europe' with his son in a hurry!

No wonder he rues for India & escaped from consequences. I was a friend of his on Facebook, I've detached him from that. His decision to leave reeks of something fishy. Double standards, masquerading as an Indian when he's surrendered Indian Passport.

I'm sure that there are many more such characters lurking around here still. A thorough Police verification will reveal further details.

Normally award winners gain increasing popularity and become people friendly. In this case the Padmashree seems to have made him arrogant and inhuman which needs to be stripped off.
