Mangaluru, Dec 23: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, said that the role of tahisldars is critical for the success of the legislative council election from local bodies constituencies being held on December 27. He therefore asked tahsildars to take added responsibility and discharge their duties efficiently.
He was addressing a meeting of tahsildars from both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts held at the auditorium of his office on Tuesday December 22, where aspects of police security were also discussed.
Giving details of polling booths, he said that there is need to post additional security men in booths where candidates, MPs, MLAs, MLCs etc cast their votes. "Added presence of security personnel will also be necessary in booths identified as sensitives and those located in naxal-affected regions," he explained.
He asked tahsildars not to overlook anything and make sure that re-poll does not happen anywhere.
The DC said that the department's authorized personnel alone have the permission to conduct video recording at polling centres and no one else can capture photos or videos even on cellphones. He said that the tahsildars would be held responsible if any of the voters capture video or photo of their voting process on cellphones, and share them on Whatsapp or other social websites.
District superintendent of police, Dr S D Sharanappa, said that this serves as a preparatory trial for coming zilla and taluk panchayat elections. "Although the voters in these cases are totally different, the preparation made now will keep us in good stead to face further elections. There is need to be extremely careful not to allow illegal polling. List of cellphones are being provided to enable officers to communicate with each other. Wherever density of people is found to be more, video recording should be done," he said.
Additional deputy commissioner of the district, Kumar, said that entry into 200 metres radius of polling booths should be allowed only to those who come to cast their votes. Counting of votes will be conducted at Ladyhill school, and parking arrangement has been made for vehicles at Karavali utsava ground, he added.
