MLA seeks bill for equal status to Marathi

Bicholim, Goa (TOI): Bicholim MLA (independent) Naresh Sawal on Monday submitted a notice to the legislature secretariat to introduce a bill seeking to amend the Goa, Daman and Diu official language act, for giving Marathi equal status with Konkani.

Confirming this development, Sawal said that the notice was submitted to the secretary of the Goa assembly on Monday, to introduce the bill in the next assembly session which is scheduled in mid-January 2016.

He said that there is no bar on having any number of languages as official languages of a state. Sawal said that there is a popular demand for a long time that Marathi should get its due and that it is not too late to grant equal status to this language which is a socio-cultural language of the region.

He said this is not to replace English for administrative work as English would continue to be an additional language for government correspondence and official purpose. Sawal hoped that many other MLAs would support the cause of Marathi. For sometime now, Marathi rajyabasha samiti has been demanding that the government must grant official language status to Marathi along with Konkani.

I agree with the MLA's argument that there is no bar to more than two official languages. This is the case in a few European countries, such as the Netherlands, where they have three official languages.
