Udupi, Dec 20: The 35th Mangaluru University inter-collegiate athletic championship for men and women 2015 and differently abled children’s sports meet were held at Mahatma Gandhi district stadium Ajjarkad, here on Saturday, December 12.
The event was jointly organized by Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and P G Study Centre, Ajjarkad, Mangaluru University and Lions club of Parkala.
Prof K Byrappa, vice chancellor, Mangaluru University inaugurated the sports meet by releasing the colourful balloons.
In his inaugural speech, Byarappa said, “Sports bring us together without any religious barriers. Sports play very important role in the development of an individual. Countries like China, USA, Australia and Russia give top most priority to sports.”
“Nearly 200 students have receiving scholarship from the University. Mangaluru University has now drafted a sports policy for student. In the policy, there is a provision to provide training and scholarship for athletes. The academic council will be implementing it in two months time. That would be a boost to strengthen the sports in the university. The university also supports to athletes who want to go abroad for sports.”
“A proposal has been sent to New Delhi to release Rs 1.83 crore for UGC and additional grant of Rs 25 crore in orders to support student,” he added.
Chief guest, Superintendent Police, Annamalai said, “There is a need to promote sports in the country. Sports built civility, leadership and virtues in children. Sports will be remembered always and games strengthen ones soul, mind and body.”
As many as 450 athletes participated in the tournament and approximately 12 differently abled school children also participated in the event enthusiastically.
Mohanchandra Nambiyar, Syndicate member, Mangaluru University, Suresh Prabhu, Lions club, Arun Kumar, president, Lions club, Parkala and others were present.
Prof Jagadish Rao, principal, Dr GWFGC welcomed the gathering and Roshan Kumar G, district director, Physical education proposed vote of thanks.
