Mangaluru, Dec 20: Carmel School is celebrating the Grand Finale of the Golden Jubilee on December 21 which is indeed a memorable and convenient landmark to make a brief stop and look backwards to the long travelled road and forwards to the road ahead.
It was way back in 1964, that the Apostolic Carmel Sisters made a humble beginning. This was done to meet the need of those pupils which were desirous of continuing their studies with English as medium of instruction when the vernacular medium was imposed on all schools in the state. With a sound and professional training, the institution was able to strive for high standards of education and has acquired a distinct status with its affiliation to the Central Board of Secondary Education which envisions a robust, vibrant and holistic school education that will engender excellence in every sphere of human endeavour and also provides quality education to promote intellectual, social and cultural vivacity amongst it’s learners. This is indeed a milestone in the history of Carmel School.
Origin of Carmel School
The beginnings of Carmel School, Mangaluru go back to the 1950s. Since education in schools was being imparted in the regional language some parents in the locality of St Ann’s convent who were desirous of getting English Education attended English tuition classes under Sr Leonilla A C in a small building on the St.Ann’s Convent campus known as the ‘Garden House’. As this ‘English School’ gained popularity the Management decided to open an English Medium Primary School on the campus in 1951 calling it St Ann’s Carmel English School. The rapid progress made by the school necessitated new buildings and soonthere was one more section in each of the 7 classes. When the Head Post and telegraph office shifted to their new premises in 1955 the vacated buildings and land were acquired as its property by St.Ann’s convent and were given to Carmel school for its classes.
In 1964 the school was recognised by the Education Department and got official approval for classes One to Five and 12 years later the recognition was made permanent.
In 1976 A Spacious Hall was built for the sake of the children’s activities which proved to be a boon to the children.
The year 1989, The commemoration of the Silver jubilee saw an old school building bursting at the seams with a crowd of 980 vivacious children fitted into it, was replaced by a new double storeyed building, airy, bright and capacious. This was all possible due to the grace of the Almighty, and generous and philanthropic parents and benefactors who helped the Management in this noble endeavour.
Now , Carmel School which began as a small institution serving few hundred students today in 2015 has grown into a complex educational enterprise on this extensive campus.
Carmel school is currently affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. New Delhi (CBSE) with classes ranging from Nursery to class 1X.
