Mangaluru, Dec 19: The annual school day of Lourdes Central School (LCS) was held on Friday, December 18 in the school premises with a splendid event on the theme 'Viva La Familia' (Hail the Family).
Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada A B Ibrahim was the chief guest of the function while mayor of Mangaluru city corporation Jacintha Alfred was the guest of honour.
A B Ibrahim called upon the parents and the teachers to interospect on the amount of pressure a child faces due to increased competetion. "Every parent wishes his or her child to be 'Numero Uno' in academics today. The pressure is so much that except academics, the child may have no other knowledge, and is in such a position that he/she is unable to recognise his neighbours and relatives. All of us are responsible for this situation. I question every parent and the teachers present, do we need to push the child to such an extent? There is a need to do some soul searching in this regard. I wish this school does not inculcate such habits in children.
"Children are the future of the country. Parents today are giving whatever the child damands. Minors are riding two-wheelers and becoming prone to accidents. Once life is lost, there is no means to regain it. I call upon the parents to interospect in this regard," he added.
Manager of LCS Fr Wilson Vitus D'Souza presided over the function. In his address he said, "It is heartwarming that the school has been awarded the International School Award (ISA) by the British Council for the third consecutive year and I congratulate the parents and teachers of the school on this feat. It is only beacuse of the efficient and energetic teachers that we have been able to achieve this. I call upon everyone to continue the same in the future as well.
"School day is a much anticipated event of the academic year. While students are eager to exhibit their talents, the parents are eager to see their child take the centre stage. But in the course of time, parents should protect the interest of their child and be responsible for their integral development."
Principal of the school Fr Robert D'Souza welcomed the gathering while vice-principal Belinda Mascarenhas rendered the vote of thanks.
Splendid cultural programmes under the theme 'Viva La Familia' (hail the family) entertained the audience.
Abner Pinto and Shruti Lal compered the programme.
