Three refugees expected to qualify for 2016 Olympics

Lausanne (Switzerland), Dec 10 (IANS): Three refugee athletes who have fled their homes are expected to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced.

Three refugees identified are a swimmer from Syria now in Germany, a Congolese judoka in Brazil and an Iranian taekwando fighter in Belgium, said Pere Miro, the deputy director general for relations at the IOC on Wednesday.

Working with aid agencies, the IOC created a $2 million fund in September to help refugees with 17 national Olympic committees involved, Xinhua news agency reported.

The IOC would be ready to help their preparation, Pere Miro added.
