Rio de Janeiro, Dec 9 (IANS): Flamengo have signed Muricy Ramalho as manager for the next two seasons, the Brazilian club has announced.
The 60-year-old takes over from Oswaldo de Oliveira, who was sacked in November, Xinhua reported.
"I'm grateful to have been given this opportunity," Ramalho told a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.
"I chose Flamengo for the size of the club. It's a big challenge and I'm ready to get to work."
Ramalho, whose managerial career spans more than two decades, has not worked since stepping down as Sao Paulo head coach in April due to illness.
Flamengo finished the 2015 Brazilian Serie A season in 12th place, 32 points behind champions Corinthians.
The six-time league winners will begin their 2016 campaign with the Rio de Janeiro state championship in late January.
