Ajman, Dec 2: GMC Hospital, the first JCI accredited hospital in the city observed World Prematurity Day on Monday November 30. The highlight of the program was a symposium organized by the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit and nursing department.
The theme of the symposium was 'born too soon: the leading cause of newborn deaths.' According to Akbar Moideen Thumbay, vice president of the healthcare division of Thumbay Group, the aim of the symposium was to raise awareness on the management and prevention of preterm births, as well as to encourage continuous medical education in neonatal healthcare and to facilitate the exchange of professional and parental experiences on the care of the premature infant.
The symposium had informative sessions by experts in pediatrics and neonatology, and was attended by hospital staff as well as visitors. Prof Mahmood Shamsuddin, prof of pediatrics – Gulf Medical University and HOD of the pediatric department of GMC Hospital formally welcomed the gathering.
The first talk was by prof Zareen Fasih, prof of pediatrics – Gulf Medical University and consultant neonatologist and in-charge of NICU – GMC Hospital, on the topic 'The Status of Neonatal Health and Prematurity: International, National and Regional Perspectives'. This was followed by a session on 'Pre-term Birth – Contemporary Management and Prevention' by Dr Prashant Hegde, medical director and HOD of the OBG Department of GMC Hospital. Dr Nadeem, consultant neonatologist of Sheikh Khalifa Hospital – Ajman presented the topic 'Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia'. Dr Lalit Parida, pediatric surgeon of GMC Hospital spoke on the topic 'Bilious Vomiting in Newborn Babies', and Simi Franas, senior staff nurse – NICU of GMC Hospital shared her views and experience on nursing care of preterm babies.
The expert sessions were followed by the narrations by parents of preterm babies, recounting and sharing their experiences about pre-term delivery and childcare.
