Kundapur, Dec 1: The body of an unidentified young woman was found on the bank of Sita River at Gummola within the limits of Belve gram panchayat in the taluk under suspicious circumstances on Monday November 30. The body, which belongs to a woman estimated to be aged between 25 and 30, was decomposed, and hence identification has posed problems.
It is believed that the woman would have died over ten days back, going by the condition of the body.
On Monday afternoon, a local, who went to the river bank at around 1 pm to switch on his pump set, found that the area was reeking due to the spread of a foul smell. A closer inspection revealed that street dogs were pulling at some rotten substance. He called some locals to the spot, and it was found that it was the body of a female.
A purple nightie was found on the body of the woman. It was taken to Manipal hospital for conducting tests. There is doubt as to whether the woman committed suicide or whether she was killed and then the body was dumped into the river. Policemen of Shankarnarayana station and police circle inspector from the taluk headquarters, P M Divakar, visited the spot and undertook investigation.
Police sources confirmed that no missing complaint was filed in the local police station in the recent past. A case stands filed in Shankarnarayana police station, and the policemen are continuing with investigation.
