Mangaluru, Nov 30: In view of the Karnataka Legislative Council elections scheduled to be held in December, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim held a press meet and explained the procedures in detail, here at DC office on Monday November 30.
Addressing the media, DC explained about elections and said, “Notification will be sent on December 2. Final date for submitting the nomination will be December 9. On December 10, nominations will be reviewed. December 12 will be the last date to withdraw the nomination. Elections will be held on December 27 from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. Counting will be done on December 30. There are about 6559 voters and 410 voting booths across the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. I will be the electoral officer for both the districts”.
“Criteria for filing nomination for legislative election are as follows; candidate should be aged 30 and above. They should hold a voter ID and should give supporting documents for the same in the nomination. They should deposit Rs 10,000 where as SC/ST candidate should deposit Rs 5,000 along with the caste certificate. They should give their asset declaration as in the case of Lok Sabha or legislative assembly election. Nominations can be filed from December 2 to 9, to the deputy commissioner or assistant deputy commissioner from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm excluding Sundays”.
“For the first time along with the name, photo of the candidate will be affixed on the ballot paper. There are four illiterate voters, if they wish to choose someone they can do so by giving in written to the deputy commissioner. Election booths will be the respective gram panchayat, taluk panchayat and corporation office. Members of the respective panchayat or corporation have to vote in that particular panchayat or corporation in which they are members. MLA's can vote in any booth.”
“We have urged all the political parties to cooperate and in this regard meeting was convened with their representatives. We have directed the officials to remove all hoardings and flex of all the political parties. Ministers can tour across the district in the government vehicle but they cannot convene meeting with the officials.”
