Panaji, Aug 17: Internationally-renowned pop artiste and music-writer Remo Fernandes has written an open letter to the state government in response to its notification announcing a state award meant to be presented to him at a public function on August 18. He has therein declined the award stating specific reasons for doing so. The full text of his letter, addressed to the director, art and cultute, Shrama Shakti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, is as follows:

quote

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your letters dated 22nd July and 3rd August 2007 informing me that the Goa Government has ‘considered my achievement and contribution in the Cultural field at national level and has decided to felicitate me by presenting State Reward under the scheme “State Reward to the recipient of National and International Award”’, and for informing me that the reward consists of memento, shawl, citation and cash reward of Rs. 50,000.

On a personal level, I am extremely grateful to Mr Digambar Kamat and the others who proposed and approved my name for this reward. However, as a son of Goa, I’m afraid I have the following to say.

1. I refuse this state award or reward as a sign of protest against the Government of Goa as well as the Opposition, which are both full of ministers and politicians who were involved in the large-scale attempted rape and sale of Goa through the infamous Regional Plan 2011, either actively or through their inaction; in protest against the Goa Government’s and the Opposition’s blatant corruption, communalism, their failure to curb and control garbage and plastic, traffic chaos, excessive immigration and construction, destruction of Goan nature and beauty, and their continued failure to provide us our two most basic needs and rights: good quality health and education.

2.I had the privilege of receiving the Padma Shri Award from the hands of President Abdul Kalam, one of the most honest, upright, wise, qualified and dignified gentlemen in India. After him, receiving a reward from the Government of Goa, whose sadly incapable and largely uneducated ministers are nothing but lowly criminals, thieves, forgers and turn-coats on sale who in reality belong in Central Jail, would be an insult to Mr Kalam, to the Padmashri Award itself, as well as to me.

3. I cannot understand the logic behind the Government of Goa [whichever the party in power] not ever recognizing or even acknowledging a Goan’s achievements at state level, and then rewarding him when he gains recognition at national level. This tardy, awkward attempt is akin to conferring a kindergarten certificate on someone who has already obtained a PhD.

I request you to kindly donate my cash reward of Rs. 50,000/- to the “Goa Bachchao Andolan”, as a contribution towards their valiant fight to save Goa from the Government of Goa.

Sincerely

Remo Fernandes

The letter is dated August 17, 2007 and its copy was immediately made available to daijiworld correspondent in Panaji.

Remo, you are a great singer and composer. No doubt about it. The Goan people recognized your talents. They decided to honor you. No doubt you received an award all India level first. You are lucky. There was someone to work for you. You know about Goa. You are a part of Goa. You live in Goa. Goa is a great piece of land of India. And people say India is a great country.

Is there anyway you become a politician in Goa? All those people who love you and your songs will be behind you. May be you can lead Goa in a better way with the help of people who love you today. There are many able politicians in Goa. Good musicians, Good actors. Goans are spread all over the world.

I met someone in Toronto, Canada not long ago. He has collection of all songs from Goa. His body is in Toronto but soul is in Goa. His houses are empty there. He doesn’t know whether he belongs to Goa or Canada. He had Goan Fenny. I liked it too much. I met Goans in many places around the world. All of them happy go lucky people. You must change your mind to accept the honor bestowed upon you by the Goan authorities and remain as part of Goa. I am proud of you.

Well done Remo. People like you are rare in India. Your open letter tells all that you have the courage to fight for the sake of Goan people and for the Goa's true culture. But again I am afraid these are the same people who elected these public servants without thinking. Again I am not blaming the public of Goa.

They perhaps thought they elected the right people but these people once elected started jumping like a frogs, this side and that side. Their only ambition is to make use of the opportunity to the maximum, with only motto 'we got 5 Years to make to live a heavenly life for another 50 years in this world itself.'

Well Remo. The comments about politicians made by you, are not only apt for Goa, but throughout India. Today's politicians are a bunch of criminals and there cannot be greater insult than calling someone 'politician' which means, lowly, ruthless, opportunistic, without morals and no conscience. While, you have shown the guts, I pray, Goan conscience will be awakened to show these petty rouges their rightful place.

My Salaams to Padmashree Remo. I really liked the contents of the letter. I am also sad that most of our illiterate politicians are unable to read and understand the contents. The few who can read and understand will ingnore such things, because they are bothered about what anybody speaks about them, but they know only to make money. Thanks for writing a letter, which shall be a best letter of the millenium.

Great stuff Remo! I first saw you perform at Alliance Francaise, Dharwad way back in 1983, with Bondo and said WOW! Great music! After that I kinda lost some respect because of your work in Hindi movies which but for a few songs, was ridiculous.

But with this letter, respect for you is soaring heavenward. I wish more people in your position would use such opportunities to denounce dishonesty and hypocrisy, among not only the politicians, but whenever and wherever such idiocy is found. Wonderful indeed! How I wish the rest of the Abhinetas would do something similar. Love you for this!

Dear Mr. Remo Fernandes, I read your letter dated 17/08/2007 addressed to the Director, Art & Culture of the Government of Goa declining the Award bestowed on you and citing reasons for your decision. I first heard about you sometimes in 1986, when you sang for Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and thereafter I used to hear about your steady success in the musical world. However, it was a great opportunity to meet you sometime in 1994 or 1995 when you were in Bahrain to give a performance at the Gulf Hotel.

I thoroughly enjoyed your performance of three to four hours’ duration and was amazed you could play sitar tunes on an electrical guitar. Unlike most singers, I was impressed at your stamina to give a virtually non-stop and solo performance. I am also aware that you are a qualified Architect.

However, after reading your open letter to the Government of Goa declining the Award, my respect for you has gone sky high. You appear to be a man with strength and conviction and guts to speak your mind and tell most of our lowly politicians what you think of them. You are very courageous in saying these words which I am quoting, “I refuse this state award or reward as a sign of protest against the Government of Goa as well as the Opposition, which are both full of ministers and politicians who were involved in the large-scale attempted rape and sale of Goa through the infamous Regional Plan 2011, either actively or through their inaction in protest against the Goa Government’s and the Opposition’s blatant corruption, communalism, their failure to curb and control garbage and plastic, traffic chaos, excessive immigration and construction, destruction of Goan nature and beauty, and their continued failure to provide us our two most basic needs and rights: good quality health and education.” “………

After him, receiving a reward from the Government of Goa, whose sadly incapable and largely uneducated ministers are nothing but lowly criminals, thieves, forgers and turn-coats on sale who in reality belong in Central Jail, would be an insult to Mr Kalam, to the Padmashri Award itself, as well as to me.” “………This tardy, awkward attempt is akin to conferring a kindergarten certificate on someone who has already obtained a PhD.” “I request you to kindly donate my cash reward of Rs. 50,000/- to the “Goa Bachchao Andolan”, as a contribution towards their valiant fight to save Goa from the Government of Goa.”

How I wish our professionals, I.A.S., I.P.S. officials and other civil servants, entertainers, celebrities, etc. had your strength of character, instead of being sycophants, toadies and a bunch of “haan jees”. Mr. Remo Fernandes, you are simply great.

Hats off to Remo. You are great. At least now these so called public servants stop fooling people by changing their alliance to different parties each time. These politicians don't want the stability and welfare of the state or nation. They just want to fill up their pockets in such a way that they don't get next chance to accumulate wealth.

Shame on you the politicians. You are shameless. Next time when you come to beg for votes dont be surprised if you are greeted with garland of sandals and rotten eggs and spoiled tomatoes. You don't deserve better than this. Hope these crooked politicians understand this especially those who are only interested in wealth. People of India will never forgive these traitors and those who insulted our own peoples president Dr. Kalam.

It looks like after seeing the recent development in the Goa Assembly, I feel this is a good decision by Remo, for not accepting his award....However, there is no need for giving any awards for Remo as he lives in our hearts all time, and he is a true legend of Music...Wish you all the very best Remo....
