Goa, Nov 25: The Congress party has said that it was sad over Bollywood star Aamir Khan's reaction on intolerance and his comment that his wife had suggested to leave the country.

AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh told reporters in Goa it was sad that Bollywood star Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao want to leave the country over intolerance issue.

“It’s sad that Aamir Khan, who is an icon among film actors not only in India, but across the world, is feeling unsafe. His wife is Hindu, she has also felt it, that with this kind of uncultured and intolerant atmosphere, it looks like those who are fighting against this will have to leave the country. This is a serious issue,” Singh said.

Earlier fellow superstar Shah Rukh Khan also spoke out against what he called 'extreme intolerance' in India.

A movement that began with writers returning state awards has spread to scientists, historians and filmmakers.

They have cited the killing of rationalists MM Kalburgi and Govind Pansare, as well as the lynching of a man over suspicions he consumed beef, as examples of rising intolerance in the country.
