Mysuru, Nov 14: In an unexpected and surprising development, JDS and BJP forged a tie for the city mayor's election which was held on Friday November 13. The alliance inflicted loss of face to Congress, which lost election held for both the posts of the mayor and deputy mayor.
B L Byrappa supported by the JDS-BJP alliance was declared elected as the new mayor of the city, while Vanita Prasanna from the BJP became deputy mayor. Congress, which chose to enter the field in spite of having definite clue that BJP and JDS would enter into an understanding, tasted defeat.
Byrappa, elected from J P Nagar (12th ward) from KJP, had supported JDS-BJP alliance and joined JDS. A total of 74 voters including 65 city corporators, MLAs, MLCs and MP took part in the election process. Byrappa defeated Congress candidate, D Nagabhushan of 34th ward by getting 41 votes against 33 of the Congress candidate.
In the election for the post of deputy mayor, Vanita Prasanna defeated Congress candidate, Rajani Annayya.
