Mangaluru, Nov 6: A thief, helped by an associate, succeeded in relieving a woman of gold chain worth about Rs 50,000 and scampering away with the booty. The incident occurred on Thursday November 5 near Besant College in the city.

The victim in this case has been identified as Bhavani (60), a resident of Anand Nagar at Akash Bhavan in the city. She was walking to a house near Besant through a connecting road located near Empire Mall to work as domestic help as usual, when a person seated in a motor bike approached, and told her that he was a policeman. He claimed that some persons were waiting a little distance ahead with a knife in hand for prospective victims. He asked her to remove her gold chain and hand it over to him for safe-keeping. He asked her to get seated in his two-wheeler, promising to safely carry her to her destination free of any problems.

The lady believed his words, removed her neck chain, and handed it over to the self-claimed policeman. She got seated on the pillion. Once the motor bike reached the main road, the bike rider handed over the chain weighing about 30 grams to his associate waiting by the roadside. After asking the woman to get down, the duo fled in the motor bike, never to be seen again.

A complaint was lodged in Urva police station about this theft thereafter.
