Udupi, Nov 5: District Hindu Jagarana Vedike Udupi condemned the celebration of Tippu Sultan birthday and opposed the fund release for it by the State government.

District convener of Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Aravind Koteshwar said, "He was an Islamist fundamentalist and he did not respect the majority Hindu religion. His attitude hurt many feelings. Tippu was anti-Kannada and imposed Persian language on citizens. He was a fanatic, tyrant and also an oppressor. He took support from French empire to deal with the British. State government should ban Tippu’s birthday anniversary. As per his birth record his birthday is on November 20. But the State has decided to celebrate his birthday on November 10, during deepavali festive season (Naraka Chaturdashi)."

Aravind also said "The birthday of Tippu should not be compulsory for government employees and school students. He forced religious conversion on Hindu people. He destroyed many Hindu temples and churches and installed Masjid at the same place. History reveals that Tippu killed nearly 36, 000 people at the place of Devaparambu. Let them use money for noble works instead of exaggerating Tippu’s administration."

Balakrishna, taluk president, Rakesh, Shankar Kota, Rakesh Kaup and others were present.
