Mumbai, Aug 8: The Governor of the state S M Krishna will preside over the launching of a special campaign by the Government of Maharashtra titled 'Nirdhar Darshan' at 9.45 am on Thursday, August 9 at the historic August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. The 'Nirdhar Darshan' campaign will highlight the spirit of India's freedom struggle.
The Quit India Movement was launched from the August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on August 9, 1942 in response to Mahatma Gandhi's call for immediate independence for India. Every year, August 9 is observed as 'Kranti Din' in the State to observe the event. This year the state government is commemorating the 150 year of the Great Revolt of 1857, 65 Anniversary of the Quit India Movement and the 60 Anniversary of Independence Day by launching the 'Nirdhar Darshan' campaign on this day.
Nirdhar Darshan comprises of five exhibition sets, which will be displayed in different parts of the State and country. The Ministry of communications is releasing a special postage stamp to commemorate the freedom struggle on this occasion. The state government will be felicitating freedom fighters from Maharashtra and other states on this occasion.
Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, union minister for Petroleum Murli Deora, deputy chief minister R R Patil, union minister of state for communications Shaqeel Ahmed, minister for culture and protocol Ashok Chavan will be present on the occasion. There will be a presentation of song and dance by 2000 youth and 'Smriti Sankalp Yatra' by Yuvak Biradari. (Contact person: Ajay Ambekar, Director of Culture, 98690 85152).
