Councillor bathed in milk at Canacona

Canacona, Oct 31 (TOI): In the last few days after the municipal poll results, the focus in Canacona is more on Kishore Shet than on sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar or former MLA Vijay Poi Khot. The reason: He was bathed with milk (dudh abhishek) after his victory. The video went viral generating much interest and also attracted a lot of flak on social media.

Shet was elected from ward No. 3 (Sheller) to the Canacona municipal council on BJP -supported panel.

His close relatives used more than 40 litres of milk to 'bathe' Shet, said sources.

When contacted, Shet said he was unaware that one of his relatives from Karnataka had vowed to god (mannat) in a temple that if elected, they would bathe him in milk. No sooner was Shet welected, than his relatives did exactly what they had promised earlier.

Shet also said that this practice is seen in many parts of the country and felt that there is nothing wrong about it as it is something to do with religious faith.

"It's like a thanksgiving once a wish is fulfilled by god," Shet said.

The 'dudh abhishek' came in for criticism from some locals, who felt that it was just waste of milk which could have been donated to under privileged children or could have been offered at Malikarjuna temple in Canacona for tirtha.

Of course wasting a little milk is nothing in comparison to all the gold and honey that will now flow in.
