Centre gives green nod to Rs 3,000 cr international airport in Goa

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) : The Centre today gave green nod for development of Rs 3,000 crore new international airport project at the Mopa village in Goa.

The greenfield airport, to be developed in four phases, will have annual passenger capacity of 13.1 million within 30 years, by 2045. It will serve both the tourism and business markets.

“As per the recommendation of the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC), the Ministry of Environment hereby accords environment clearance (EC) for the project greenfield international airport at Mopa,” the Union Environment Ministry said in the EC letter written to the Goa government.

The environment clearance has been given to the project subject to the compliance of certain specific and general conditions, the letter said.

Among some conditions, the Goa government’s Directorate of Civil Aviation has been asked to ensure availability of adequate land at the junction of the Mopa airport road and Mumbai-Goa NH-17 for traffic circulation, and to provide all traffic interchanges and proposed clover.

It has also been asked to get approval of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the approach and exit roads to the airport.

The final green nod has been given after the Goa government submitted before the ministry’s panel, EAC, the point-wise reply to issues raised by an NGO Federation of Rainbow Warriors that had alleged flaws in the recently conducted environment impact assessment (EIA) process, sources said.

In the first phase, the state government has proposed to develop one runway, with half parallel taxi-way, three runway exits by 2020 to accommodate annual passenger capacity of 4.4 million. The estimated cost of the project in Phase I would be Rs 1,500 crore.

In July, the Goa government had said tenders for new airport at Mopa would be finalised by December 2015.
The Mopa village is located in North Goa near Maharashtra border, approximately 35 kilometres north of Goa’s capital city Panaji.

People working abroad look more concerned about airports for development. What about basic necessities like water, electricity, gas, roads, transport systems. What has the UPA done to improve this? What is the volume of corruption UPA was involved in? Can anyone justify?

I think the Mangalore airport needs to be upgraded to receive the wide bodied aircrafts, so that Airindia Express's monopoly can be countered. Recently I traveled to Mumbai by Emirates. The service was excellent both on board the Emirates and at the new Terminal 2 . Whereas, after charging hefty fare Airindia Express does not provide any service under the pretext that it is a budget airline. But the truth is this so called budget airline is more expensive than the regular airline.People are compelled to fly to Managlore due to its monopoly and to save some time. It is high time for our local politicians to push for the up gradation of the existing Mangalore airport if space permits or else relocate it to a new location perhaps may be to Moodbidre or any other location where the flat space is available.

    @ Anthony Almeida
Sure I agree with you about the overall quality of service that one gets on AI express but in their defense AI Express does not claim to be a full service airline.
If you consider that more than 50% of the fare you pay is pure government tax you will realize that AI express is far from overcharging. You can blame our governments greed for that. Full service Indian Flight Operators such as Jet will charge you way more that AI charges over the same sectors. Re Emirates Airline It is their good fortune that the airline is not exposed to tax regimes that our government deems appropriate for those who need to partake of air travel.

Already upgraded to enhance landing capacity of large aircrafts. Now, on an average there are 40 landings & takeoffs which is 100% more than it was 3 years ago!

Mangalore airport has 5 departures to Bangalore, 4 to Mumbai daily, 2 to Chennai, 1 to Kerala, 2 to Chennai, Hyderabad, one to Delhi & 4 departures of Air India Express to Middle East destinations
