BJP will learn its fate today

Panaji, Oct 27 (TOI): By Tuesday afternoon, it will be known whether the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed panels will emerge victorious in the 11 municipal councils that went to polls on Sunday.

The BJP camp is overconfident of romping home with the trophy in 9-10 councils.

BJP state president Vinay Tendulkar made it clear that the party would not take the support of any independents to form the council in any of the municipalities.

BJP leaders, including defence minister Manohar Parrikar and chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar, vigorously campaigned for party-supported panels.

After the zilla panchayat elections earlier this year, when the BJP learnt the mood of the electorate, the ruling party will now gain feedback of its performance under Parsekar in urban areas on Tuesday. Counting begins at 8am in 9 centres.

Political observers are monitoring the results closely as this will reflect the BJP's performance in the state.

While party leaders are sure of smooth sailing in Mapusa, despite the lack of development in the commercial town, as well as in Pernem and Sanguem, it is to be seen whether BJP-backed panels in Mormugao, Margao, Bicholim and Quepem are able to fight opposition.

Congress has refuted charges by the BJP that the opposition has shied away from the civic polls. Spokesperson Agnelo Fernandes said that the party has not changed its stand, that it is opposed to civic polls on party lines.

"The electorate will not forgive the BJP for its U-turns on casinos, special status, the regional plan, and also for its failure to resolve issues like garbage, etc," he said.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) secretary Sunil Kawthankar alleged that the BJP has become arrogant and their panels will be taught a lesson which will be known on Tuesday.
