Obama calls for deepening US-Pakistan relationship


Washington, Oct 23 (IANS): US president Barack Obama on Thursday said his country has very strong relations with Pakistan whose community was playing an important role in the US, media reported.

Welcoming Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the White House here ahead of a much awaited meeting, the US president said: “The Pakistani community is playing an important role in development and progress of the US.”

“United States wants to enhance its cooperation with Pakistan in science and technology,” Obama added in his welcoming remarks to Sharif who is on a four-day official visit to the US, reports Radio Pakistan.

Earlier, Sharif held a meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden over breakfast at the latter's residence here.

Both sides reviewed Pakistan-US bilateral relationship as well as discussed issues of mutual interest.

Sahrif apprised Biden of his government's priorities and policies and also about the important economic milestones achieved over the last two years.

Both leaders also discussed regional, political and security issues, especially Pakistan-US cooperation in the war against terrorism.

They reaffirmed their commitment to remaining closely engaged to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

Sahrif and Biden also agreed on the need to closely coordinate for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.

Vice President Biden acknowledged Pakistan's positive and crucial role in the war against terrorism and reaffirmed US commitment to continue helping Pakistan in achieving their shared interests.
