Panaji, Oct 22 (TOI): Saligao villagers reiterated their demand to shift the proposed garbage treatment plant from the plateau, stating that it cannot cater to entire North Goa and may end up as a dump due to certain conditions.
Speaking to mediapersons on Wednesday, Saligao comunidade president Ian da Costa stated that the European-styled plant is unsuitable for local conditions and had been considered and rejected earlier.
"Dr Wilfred de Souza (then tourism minister) had said that the climate and the type of garbage sought to be treated in the plant here was different from the garbage and climate there," he said.
Saligao sarpanch, Eknath Oraskar stated that the panchayat is not opposing the plant, but does not want it as a facility for entire North Goa.
The opponents appear to be fighting a losing battle with a major part of the plant already set up. Bombay high court at Goa has granted approval to the plant on the basis of the government's pleadings.
Da Costa alleged that the Damocles sword is hanging over the villagers' head, as many queries remained unanswered. These pertain to tonnes of unsegregated garbage arriving at the site.
