Panaji, Oct 21 (TOI): As no objections and no suggestions were received from the general public during the trial period of one-way roads in Panaji, the Goa police's traffic cell has recommended that the district magistrate issue a notification declaring internal roads as one-way roads in the capital city.
In a letter to the district magistrate, traffic police said that 45 days has been completed on October 15, since one- way traffic movement on internal roads of Panaji was implemented on a temporary basis. The system has been found working satisfactory as almost all the members of public have praised the present traffic movement which has reduced congestion in Panaji city to a great extent.
"Traffic police has decided to implement the arrangement permanently," deputy superintendent of police, traffic, D G P Angle said.
Speaking to TOI, Angle said that they have received verbal suggestions with regards to double-parking on one way roads, parking of vehicles near barricades etc, but there was not a single written objection or suggestion received from public on the new traffic system in the city.
Traffic police has also asked the CCP to make available additional traffic signals required to be erected at various locations in the city.
In a bid to decongest the city and streamline traffic flow, the traffic cell, in collaboration with the corporation of the city of Panaji (CCP), had declared 17 major roads in the city as dedicated one-way routes from September 1 on a trial basis.
Four of the main arterial roads of the city, namely M G road, Dada Vaidya road, 18th June road, and Menezes Braganza road were strictly reserved for one-way traffic from September 1.
On July 31, CCP had approved the new traffic plan for the city and had asked the traffic cell to draw up a plan for implementation. During the one-month trial phase, traffic police personnel were deputed on roads to guide traffic and refrain from penalizing motorists who may take a wrong turn out of habit.
The proposal to decongest the city and regularize traffic is part of the larger smart cities mission and may also include the introduction of hop-on-hop-off buses at a later stage.
