'The Finisher' finished? India debate Dhoni after Kanpur ODI loss

New Delhi, oct 12, reuters: The "helicopter shot" has disappeared, the boundaries are not flowing from his bat and the whisper is now growing louder that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is no more the middle-order finisher who could single-handedly get India over the line.

Even for his ardent fans, and he is still the most popular player in the cricket-mad country, it was painful to watch Dhoni struggle in Sunday's one-day series opener against South Africa.

Time and again, he tried the big shots that once came out of his blade with amazing regularity and time and again he could not connect.

Known for his penchant to seal victory with a six, exhibited famously in the final of the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni managed only one boundary in his 31-ball ordeal as the wheels came off India's chase in the final overs in Kanpur.

Not that he did not try.

He stepped out against Morne Morkel, made room against Dale Steyn and ran hard between the wickets in the scorching heat, trying to do with the legs what his bat could not.

His laboured batting was all the more evident seen against centurion Rohit Sharma's effortless strokemaking at the other end during their 55-run stand.

"Dhoni used to be great when the ball was pitched up to him," former captain K. Srikkanth told Monday's Times of India newspaper.

"But bowlers ... have understood that the key is not to give him any room to manoeuvre and Dhoni would not be the same player (again).

"Dhoni can still be an accumulator but I don't think we are going to see the same devastating MSD in the days to come."

Going through a lean patch, Dhoni has also baffled many by wishing to bat higher in the order, having rejected the same suggestion for the large part of his career.

Former captain Anil Kumble is part of the fast-dwindling tribe still convinced that Dhoni remains India's best "finisher".

"I don't think his role has changed. I don't think he should be pushed at number four to play a different role. He is still a good finisher," said Kumble.

"One hit (in Sunday's match) and we would have been talking differently. His strike rate has obviously come down and the pitch did not help either."

Dhoni also blamed the low-bounce at Green Park Stadium and rued how unforgiving the fans are.

"It's not an easy job, it does not always work your way," he said after the loss.

"It's a gamble but of course that's my job in the side. I'm somebody who has to finish the job for the team.

"When you finish a lot of many games, people always remember the ones you have not finished."

It would be better if the reigns of captaincy are handed over to Rohit Sharma, who is not only our best performing player at present, but has also proved (whenever presented with an opportunity) to be a very shrewd and capable captain.

I HAVE DOUBT IN VIRAT KHOLI'S GAME PLAY AGAINST DHONI.

SINCE AUSTRALIA'S GAME PLAY V. KOHLI IS LOOSING CONTINUOUSLY WITHOUT SCORING.

DHONI AND RAINA ALSO HAVE LOST SOME FORM/PERFORMANCE. NOT LIKE BEFORE.

Opposition are also playing to win, not for lose they try to take wickets. Yesterday they succeeded to put pressure on India as India under Dhoni were succeeding earlier in same manner. Why to blame anyone. We enjoyed a nice match till last bowl and India lost gracefully. Nobody can win every match. This is part of fame.

Dhoni is no more good either as a captain or as batsman. it is high time for him to retire from cricket gracefully. Kohli's aggressive nature is sometimes makes more harm than good.
Our ors are playing politics while ing national team. I don't consider Stuart Binney is fit to be considered as allrounder that too in national team.
we have many good young players (hitter of the ball) in India for ODIs. Why our ors depend on only few players and lose match. Try with young promissing players based on their present performance. Even Harbajan singh is not able to trouble opponent team batsmen with his spin bowling but still he finds place in national team. Our medium face has become mediocre infront of South African batsmen. We need good swingers of the ball than speed.
Hoping for the good result in rest of the ODIs.

For gods sake don't call Dhoni as a perfect finisher.
He was never a perfect finisher ever.

The best finishers cricket world ever saw was Michael Bevan and Michael Hussy.
Mr Dhoni is not even 10% of them.

Dhoni is good in remaining not out and never had an idea about on par score (Batting first), he just remained not out.
Even while chasing we have seen him remaining Not out so many times and 5 out of 10 matches were lost.

He just has a huge fan following coz he has money power and people praise even if he scores a single just coz of that power and hold he has in the cricketing world.

No footwork, No Technique and those nonsense Helicopters - gods sake!!

He survived in the cricketing world with sheer luck.

We expect India to win every time, every match, every where. Nothing wrong in it. But we should also accept the results sportingly. Sometimes, a wrong decision, an excellent ball, an excellent catch, excellent fielding from the opponents can cost the match. Let us learn to enjoy the game. If victory is ours, let us celebrate. If the opponents win, let us congratulate them. In the meantime, best wishes for India for the remaining matches.

For a sports person there are many factors which add to his success like age, energy, enthusiasm, goal, spirit of achieving etc.
Dohni performed well in the past and proved his worth. Now he is financial sound and may not have such challenging spirit and to die for the game. Let others who can replace take his position and prove.
No one can remain evergreen or on the top in sports for ever.

Raina is a big failure ,he is fit for only IPL,he will score 5 runs in 7 matches and when everyone crys then he will score 50 runs,so everyone is happy.
    this is our cricket.

Not every match is the same. Yesterday why alone Dhoni to be blamed. The middle order in Indian side failed then what Dhoni can do? Absent of Mr. Aswin made a big difference. They did not to come up to the expectations ! Only Rohit Sharma and Rahane shined gloriously but others not even tried . Dhoni still a good player and captain of Indian team. Wish good luck in the remaining matches.

Dhoni doesn't deserves a place in Indian team. He is a good captain but not a good player at present. He should retire from the all form of cricket and save some respect whatever left or he will be a next Ganguly. Keeping in mind for next world cup ors should look at young players.

No doubt Dhoni's shots are not like before. But as a International batsman, he should know how to hook/pull in backfoot towards midwicket. He cannot wait every time overpitched delivery for helicopter shot.Instead getting doubles/singles, he should have gone for big hits 3-4 overs earlier..what Binny is doing there, his batting is not qualified for international level.

During yesterday's match, Dhoni was seen holding his rib-area after each hit, meaning, his body is giving in. He has played enough matches, earned enough glory to India and helped many struggling non-form players.

Its time to let him go, gracefully.

Not at all. We can not tag him as "Finished". It happened with everyone. Some got more and more chance but few of them gracefully retired.

If in current series against SA Dhoni's form remains same then he also must retire. I think he himself best knows about it.

But I just hate him because the partiality shown against The Wall and now playing hide and seek with Rahane.

Advocating Dhoni's continuation in cricket are not the sports critics but are only the blind fans of Dhoni.Dhoni is the one who lost the match for India. He is not playing in the interest of the team/country. To hide his inability he is reasoning Aswins absence. There is no second thought for his ouster.
