Two held in Goa for Maharashtra woman's rape

Panaji, Oct 7 (IANS): Two local residents of Goa have been arrested for the rape of a 20-year-old woman from Maharashtra and her suspected drug overdose, police said on Wednesday.

A senior police officer declining to be named said that the woman, a resident of Raigad district in Maharashtra, came to Goa along with a friend and was holidaying with local resident Hanif Mohammad, 25, over the last weekend.

Hanif - a resident of Karaswado, 15 km from Panaji - sourced drugs from an alleged peddler, Nana Savlo, at a night club in Anjuna and spiked the woman's drinks late on Saturday. He raped her after she became semi-conscious, according to the first information report filed at Anjuna police station late Tuesday.

"On Sunday, she began foaming at the mouth and the accused rushed her to a district hospital in nearby Mapusa town... Initially, a drug overdose was suspected, and subsequent physical examination also showed vaginal penetration," said the FIR registered after a medical report confirmed sexual intercourse.

Police said Hanif told during questioning that the sexual act was recorded on his mobile phone.

While Hanif has been booked under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, he and Savlo have also been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

"The woman's family has arrived here to be with her," a police official said.
