Belgium down Argentina, make Davis Cup final after 111 years

Brussels, Sep 21 (IANS/EFE): Steve Darcis got Belgium into the Davis Cup final, a feat the country has not achieved since 1904, defeating Argentina's Federico Delbonis in four sets in the last elimination match and winning the semi-final 3-2.

The No. 64-ranked Darcis took 3 hours and 9 minutes on Sunday to defeat Delbonis, ranked one spot lower, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 and 7-6(3).

The last time Belgium made it to the Davis Cup was 111 years ago, in its debut year in the world tennis competition, although it ultimately lost there to Britain 4-1.

The November 27-29 final will once again be a face-off between Belgium and Britain, the latter of which on Sunday qualified for the final after defeating Australia, also 3-2.

Scotland's Andy Murray, ranked No. 3 in the world, defeated Australia's Bernard Tomic 7-5, 6-3 and 6-2 in 1 hour and 46 minutes on Sunday, garnering the third and decisive point in the classification that earned Great Britain a spot in the final, which will be held in Belgium.
