Sexual harassment cells in media houses will be checked: Minister

Panaji, Sep 10 (IANS): The implementation in media houses of the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act 2013 -- mandating setting up of special committees at the workplace -- will be looked into, a minister said on Thursday.

At a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Panaji, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore said: "We will immediately look into it."

He said that self-regulation vis-a-vis the media should go beyond the realm of programming and should also cover aspects related to welfare of the industry's workforce.

When asked about media houses, especially in Goa, failing to set up anti-sexual harassment committees at work place as mandated by the 2013 legislation, he said the fact remains that "when acts are passed it is incumbent on the media houses to follow these rules and regulations".
