Transport director quizzed in peon bribery case

Panaji, Sep 4 (TOI): Anti-corruption branch (ACB)of the directorate of vigilance on Thursday quizzed transport director Arun Desai in relation to a corruption case involving Dattaram 'Damu' Gaude, a peon working for him arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe.

An ACB officer said that Desai was questioned for nearly an hour. The officer said that Desai was called to verify whether he had any role in the corruption case.

ACB superintendent of police Bosco George said that assistant motor vehicle inspector Alister Fernandes in his complaint had stated that the peon had demanded a bribe for Desai to close a department inquiry against him.

Gaude is remanded to judicial custody and his bail hearing is likely to come up before a special court on Friday.

In June, the cyber-crime cell of Goa police had arrested Fernandes and subsequently released him on bail for allegedly hacking into an email account and impersonating a government officer. Fernandes' wife was also arrested and later released on bail.

Fernandes did not intimate the transport department about his arrest at the time. The department issued a show-cause notice to him and Fernandes filed his reply. While the inquiry was in progress, Gaude had approached Fernandes and told him that he would be dismissed if the case wasn't not amicably settled.
