Saudi: 11 killed, 219 injured in fire at Aramco oil company residential complex

Updated

Al Khobar, Aug 30 (Agencies) : A large fire broke out Sunday in the basement of a sprawling residential complex in Saudi Arabia's oil-rich east, killing at least 11 people and injuring 219, civil defence officials in the kingdom said.

The early morning blaze happened in a residential compound known as Radium in the eastern city of Khobar. It is used by the state oil giant Saudi Aramco, which oversees petroleum production in the Opec powerhouse.

The company said an investigation has begun into the cause of the fire.

The interior ministry's general directorate of civil defence said the casualties involved victims of various nationalities, without elaborating. Like many companies in the Gulf, Aramco relies on migrant labourers to help bolster its workforce.

Some of those injured were in critical condition, the directorate said. It put the number of injured at 219 by early afternoon.

Aramco said some of the injured were treated at the scene, where an emergency command centre had been set up, while others were taken to company medical facilities and local hospitals.

Mohammed Siddique, an engineer who lives nearby, told The Associated Press he first saw smoke coming from the complex at around 6am. Emergency crews struggled to contain the blaze.

Images posted by witnesses on social media showed thick smoke pouring from the complex as helicopters hovered overhead.

"I saw at least 30 ambulances and three helicopters. The smoke was very heavy," Siddique said.

Siddique described the complex, which includes multiple buildings, as relatively new and "nicely built" with a mix of western, Asian and Saudi residents. It is rented by Aramco and guarded by security teams affiliated with the company, he said.

Residents affected by the blaze were being moved to alternate accommodation. Aramco promised to use "all means and available resources" to help those affected.

Khobar was the site of a 1996 truck bombing at a dormitory for US air force personnel that killed 19 Americans and wounded 372. The man described as the mastermind of the attack, Ahmed al-Mughassil, was arrested after a nearly two-decade manhunt, American and Saudi officials said last week. The FBI has described him as the head of the armed wing of the Saudi Hezbollah group.

Very unfortunate incident!! Wherever Westerners are involved, the safety standards are given the highest priority, nothing special in SAramco, Asians being also employed enjoy these facilities along!!

BTW, when they are getting money for just pumping out oil, why will not they be able to afford to offer the highest standards in all aspects!!!

Very tragic and sad incident. RIP
Due to some recent bad political developments KSA is increasingly experiencing terror related incidents. It's premature to link this incident. They will surely find out the root cause.

When it comes to safety, Aramco ruled their various sub-contractors with their own strict guidelines to follow. But now we want to see how they elaborate their own safety hazard towards their own workers & staff???

Saudi Aramco, earlier popularly known as Arabian American Oil Co. (Aramco) is the largest crude oil and natural gas liquids producing company in the world. I was a direct employee of this company for 20 years and I fully agree with the views expressed by Aadil Khan, Max & Jessie Rasquinha, Alban D'Souza and Ronald Gomes on this company. On and above this, I want to say here that this company is the best managed company with rules, regulations, procedures and transparency which only a few companies may have in the world. I feel sorry for this fire incident. The Dhahran main housing complex is called American City by Saudis.

Being an employee of ARAMCO for over a decade, I was shocked to hear/read the fire incident at one of its residential complexes at Al Khobar. In spite of ARAMCO's very high world standard of safety measures, this is really unfortunate that so many lost their lives. ARAMCO gives so much importance for it's super facilities and specially safety that they don't even use pin (which we use for papers) because it's against safety!!

Sad news. ! It is very pleasure to work in giant company Aramco offices including Contractor employees as Aramco has always give high importance on the safety and security as well as the welfare of their employees. I had friends directly working for Aramco and visited them. Aramco is known for safety. As I earlier worked in Aramco- Dhahran under the Contractor employee saw how much the company care for safety for their staff and labour including Contractor Staff. Ever week there is assembly and film show about safety.Any way God bless the ill-fated employees and their families. Also RIP for the departed souls.

Aramco has always placed high emphasis on the safety and security as well as the welfare of their employees. Even the domestic camp- where Aramco houses all the employees dedicated for the Senior Staff, were well furnished with all the amenities.

The fire in the residential complex of Alkhobar will be a good eye opener to Aramco, and they will take all new precautions so that these fire hazards never take place again.

Aramco has always proved to be a Premier Employer of the world who took good care of their Employees. Although we did not belong to Aramco, we as outsiders relied so much on Aramco for our food requirements, the commissary, the distilled water, the cube ice, the lovely beaches, the Golf courses and also the opportunity to worship once a week plus many other amenities, including the fine Dining Hall facilities.

God bless Aramco, a mighty organization who rendered so much of importance for their Employee welfare that was a good motivation for all the rest of the
Saudi employers. The sports and recreation facilities of Aramco were of the "super" quality.

I agree with what you said, but there was always discrimination as far as Asian employees are concerned, be it in housing, facilities, salary, visa regulations, allowances etc. Being an ex-Aramco employee, I have come across all this. Yet, I can't deny that Aramco was providing best facilities compared to other local companies.

This discrimination prevails everywhere in the world. After all you don't find laborers, cab drivers and domestic helps from developed world working in the Arabian gulf and despite this discrimination, people from Asia throng the gulf due to not so good economic condition back home.

Although we my not know each other, I have heard your name in Aramco. All 20 years, I was in Dhahran office and what you said here is correct. As you know, there are 5 payrolls in the company, (Saudi, American, European, Other Arabs and Asian) and payment was according to the category were we came from. There were Mangaloreans, Goans and other Indians who were in American and British payrolls since they were recruited from there. However, all will agree that the Company is very transparent as far as all the dealing with employees.

    Very sad indeed.

This new housing comlex was commissioned a year ago as the vacant housing units are exhausted in the Saudi Aramco's main family housing camp at Dhahran.

I am sure Aramco will do everything to find out the root cause of this tragedy.
