Mangaluru, Aug 20: An awareness programme on anti ragging law was held at P A Engineering College, Mangaluru on August 19 in association with DK District Legal Service Authority and Mangaluru Advocate Association.
The programme was inaugurated by D T Puttarangaswamy, VI addl district and sessions judge. In his inaugural speech D T Puttarangaswamy said, “The importance of anti ragging law should be known to each student.”
The chief guest of the day Ganesha B, senior civil judge and member secretary, district legal services authority spoke on the occasion. He said, “Ragging is a menace to the society and it should be curbed at root level by educating the students in their campus”.
Resource person A Udayananda, senior advocate, Mangaluru Bar Association explained the consequences of ragging and the anti ragging law in detail. He said, “India is the largest democracy in the world where we have a lot of freedom. But this does not give us the liberty to do whatever we want. There are limits for everything. If that limit is crossed then the legal cell takes authority and formulates certain rules to curb the menace prevailing in the society. Supreme Court of India has taken a strong stand to curb ragging.”
Yashodara P Karkera, general secretary, Mangaluru Bar Association, Abdullah Ibrahim, executive director, PAET and K M Haneef, director(administration) PAET participated as guests of honour.
In his presidential address, Dr Abdul Sharief, principal, PACE said, “Silent spectators also have the duty to curb ragging by informing the concerned authority.”
Prof Kavitha, dept of E and C welcomed the guests. Prof Biniya, dept of EC proposed the vote of thanks. Zeashan and Jameela Ruhi compered the programme.
