Mangaluru, Aug 20: Retired vice chancellor of Mangalore University (MU), Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, passed away on Wednesday August 19. Murthy, a native of Mysuru, was 66. He is survived by wife, two daughters, and a son.
Prof Murthy's end came when participating in a meeting of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) at Aurangabad. He suffered cardiac arrest and breathed his last.
Prof Shivashankara Murthy had functioned as chancellor of MU from March 1, 2010, to March 3, 2014. Before that, he was the acting vice chancellor of Mysore University, after having been professor of botany for long.
He had got postgraduate degree in botany from Mysore University, before getting his PhD degree from Ottawa University, Canada. He had served Mysore University for about 37 years in the capacity of professor and researcher. After retirement, he had settled down at Mysuru.
Prof Murthy was born at Talakadu in T Narasipura taluk of Mysuru district on May 2, 1949. He also functioned as adviser to UGC experts committee and UPSC. He was a noted educationist and administrator, who always laid emphasis on discipline.
His funeral is planned to be held today, family sources informed.
Condolence meet: Mangalore University held condolence meet relating to the demise of Prof Murthy at Mangala auditorium on Wednesday evening, where rich tributes were paid to the departed soul by vice chancellor, Prof K Bhyrappa. Registrar, Prof P S Yadapadithaya hailed compassionate personality of the deceased and credited him with working hard for the growth of the university.
Dean of arts faculty, Prof K Chinnappa Gowda, also spoke on the occasion. Teaching staff of the university, non-teaching staff, and students had participated.
