Udupi, Aug 19: A young man tried to kill himself, frustrated over pressure tactics employed by a moneylender trying to extract exorbitant interest from him. He has been admitted into a private hospital at Brahmavar in the taluk. The police have registered case against the moneylender in question under different provisions of Karnataka Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act and Moneylenders Act.

Reportedly, Sanjay, son of Ranganakere Sumitra, a resident of Hanehalli village, had borrowed Rs 32,000 from a person named Roopesh a year back. As security, Roopesh had collected blank cheques from Sanjay's friend, Uday Poojary,  and sister, Chaitra. It is said that the loan was repaid in full in two installments. But Roopesh continued to pester Sanjay for payment of additional interest.

When he refused to oblige, Roopesh reportedly collected Rs 40,000 by threatening Sanjay of presenting the cheques to the bank, warning that his future would turn bleak if these chques are returned unpaid. As Roopesh placed demand for payment of additional amount of Rs 40,000, Sanjay swallowed large number tablets on August 15. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital at Brahmavar.

Sanjay's mother, Sumitra, has filed police complaint against Roopesh. The police, who have registered case as above, are investigating the matter.
