Mangalore, Jun 15: Here’s something to be proud of. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the lowest in Dakshina Kannada district when compared to the other states in India.
According to office of the registrar general, sample registration system out of 1000 infants in India 58 infants die. But in Dakshina Kannada district the infant mortality rate is only 10.2 per 1,000 live births. While the number of infants dying in India each year is shocking, the district has achieved a remarkable feat with a lowest Infant Mortality Rate.
The number of women giving birth at hospitals has increased from 83 per cent in 1999 to 96 per cent in 2006. The death of an infant has reduced from 207 in 1999 to 96 in 2006.
The number of under-weight infants has also lessened from 896 in 1999 to 580 in 2006.
National Family Health Survey by the union health ministry has shown that Dakshina Kannada is a healthy district for children.
