Assam singer Zubeen Garg in row over disrespect to tricolour

Guwahati, Aug 17 (IANS): Assam's popular musician Zubeen Garg has got himself embroiled in a controversy for allegedly disrespecting the national flag.

NGO Sahai president Raju Mahanta filed an FIR in Morigaon against Garg for hoisting the tricolour at his house at Guwahati's Kharghuli area wearing informal dress and thereby insulting the flag, police said.

Garg uploaded a photograph on his Facebook account showing him unfurling the tricolour on August 15 at his residence while wearing shorts and informal dress.

The FIR also alleged that the singer did not sing the national anthem while unfurling the tricolour.

"We have registered a case against the singer," a police official said.

The singer, however, was not available for comment.

In April this year, Garg stirred a controversy while performing at a function in Guwahati's Khanapara area, when he wielded a gun and threatened to shoot if the audience leave the show.

Police rushed to the event immediately after being informed, but only to find a toy pistol with the musical icon.
