Udupi, Jun 14: In view of the repeated accidents involving private buses, the district administration has passed a notification that will curtail all forms of entertainment in the buses.
Some of the buses in the district have installed stereo systems and television sets which distract the attention of the driver. Also, the drivers attend to changing the TV channels or the cassettes in the stereo which again contributes to the increasing number of accidents.
With these points in view and also the fact that many drivers talk on their mobile phones while driving, the district administration convened a meeting of district in-charge minister V S Acharya, deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj, RTA officials and others recently and decided to take strict action against those violating the notification.
According to the notification, private bus owners have been directed to remove television sets and stereo systems from the buses. Moreover, passengers are requested to lodge a complaint if the driver talks on the cell phone while driving. The license of the driver will be withdrawn immediately and action will be initiated against the bus owner.
The transport department and the police have been instructed to carry out regular inspection of the private buses to ensure that the above guidelines are followed strictly, failing which, the permit of the buses will be cancelled, said RTA secretary Omkareshwari.
