Windhoek, Aug 17 (IANS): Namibia's senior national rugby team won the Africa Cup Division 1A Championships for the fifth time in the capital Windhoek after beating Zimbabwe 80-6.
The Welwitschias pipped Zimbabwe at the Hage Geingob Stadium in the 15th edition of the Africa Cup championships organised by Rugby Africa under the auspices of the International Rugby Union.
Although Zimbabwe started off on a promising note after Tichafara Makwanya's penalty score 15 minutes into the game, Namibia equalized through Rohan Kitshoff eight minutes later, reported Xinhua.
Namibia however took the lead soon after when Theuns Kotze took a penalty that made the score 7-3.
Thirty minutes into the game, Zimbabwe made the scores 7-6 but this scoreline did not last after Renaldo Bothma and JC Greyling took two tries that were converted into scores by Kotze. Then came in Kitshoff just before half-time with a score pushing Namibia up to 28-6.
The second half belonged to the Welwitchias with Johan Deysel and Kotze scoring to put the team in the lead with 35-6. As if that was not enough, the Welwitschias ran in seven more tries that saw Russell van Wyk and Johnnie Redelinghuys scoring twice each.
Other Welwitchias players who contributed to the scoreline are Rathony Becker and Tinus du Plessis who helped Kotze to convert five of the tries.
