Mangalore, Jun 13: Persons caught in carrying “hawala” money near Uppinagady were released on bail here on Monday, June 11.
Abdulla and Mohammad Shafi who were the residents of Bekal in the Kasargod district were released on bail by the Puttur court. They had been kept in police custody and were produced in court on June 10. The court had extended their judicial custody till June 11. On June 11, once again they were produced in the court and thereafter released on bail.
The duo was caught while traveling in a private bus enroute from Bangalore to Mangalore, carrying the money in a bag. The police were alerted by a tip-off from their source, after which a crack team under the leadership of A S P Dr P S Harsha intercepted the bus and on checking caught the culprits with the bag containing Rs. 39 lakhs (initial sources had claimed that it was Rs 60 lac in cash).
The police produced in the court. The court ordered them to be kept in police custody for further investigation till June 10. Police have claimed that this crime to be a part of a larger international network, and so have asked the assistance of Income Tax department to get to the bottom of the matter from their end. Officer of the Law Implementation Division of Income Tax, Johns George has been appointed as the investigating officer with the permission of the court.
Whilst in police custody the culprits had applied for bail, which had been rejected. However, when they were produced in the court on 11 June for the second time, the court granted them bail.
