Pink supports NGO amidst controversy

Los Angeles, Aug 14 (IANS): Singer Pink has extended support to Planned Parenthood, an American NGO for reproductive health as well as maternal and child health services, amidst controversy following calls from Republicans to cut its federal funding.

"Planned Parenthood was the only organisation in my town growing up available to teach young girls @ sexual responsibility. I stand with PP," the "So what" singer wrote on micro-blogging website Twitter.

"Do these Rep. hopefuls plan on visiting every town in America handing out pamphlets, hugs, life-saving info screening?! What's their plan," Pink wrote.

A fan posted: "I like the idea that someone might support people when they need help, but I don't like PP selling baby parts for cash."

To that, the "Sober" singer replied: "Are you for real? Did you hear that on Fox News?"

Anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress previously released undercover videos which allegedly showed Planned Parenthood employees discussing the sale of fetal body parts for research.

The organisation has denied any wrongdoings and said the footage was edited.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said in a statement: "The allegation that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation is not true. There is no financial benefit for tissue donation for either the patient or for Planned Parenthood.

"In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed, which is standard across the medical field."

Republicans, including presidential candidate Rand Paul, wanted the government to cut federal funding, approximately $500 million, which Planned Parenthood receives annually.
