Mangalore, Jun 12: Free Bone Mineral Density test will be organized by KMC Hospital Attavar in association with Alkem Bergen healthcare here on Wednesday June 13 and Friday June 15.

According to a press release Osteoporosis is a bone disease when bone becomes thin and fragile leading to fracture. The disease occurs when either the body fails to form enough new bone or too much of the old bone is destroyed or both. This disease affect a large number of women as compared to men, but usually most of them become aware of the disease only after it reaches an advance stage. This disease is not curable and the only precaution one can take is to delay the process.

The symptoms of the disease are backache, pain in the bones and fracture with the minor fall. The disease is diagnosed only after the bone is fractured; old age and heavy body built are the common causes of osteoporosis, the release stated.

Smoking, excessive alcohol intake, deficiency of calcium and vitamin D, excessive drinking of carbonated drinks steroid intake and premature menopause add to the risk of developing Osteoporosis.

The most simple and common method utilizing ultra sound principle to detect Osteoporosis is Bone Mineral Density test, stated the release.
